Daily Wow I’m Alive Minute

 Daily Wow I’m Alive Minute

Once upon a time, all over the world life become unbearably dreary because of constant wars and things getting dirty because of pollution and everybody worrying about global warming, and people forgot how to enjoy life.  One day a group of people found an old library with outrageous comic books about a boy called Calvin and his pet tiger named Hobbes.  The boy was so bursting with happiness about being alive that the people decided to imitate him.  The comic would come out every day so they invented a new holiiday called “wow I’m alive minute” that was to be celebrated every day so that people would never forget that no matter how dismal things seemed to be it is still possible to remember to enjoy life. Over the years it was celebrated all over the world.

People are free to choose whatever time of the day they would like to celebrate their “wow I’m alive” minute.  At first, people began celebrating “Wow I’m alive minute” by imitating Calvin, but eventually people invented all kinds of activities.  The main idea is to do the most outrageous thing you can to remind yourself how alive you are.  Examples are doing a cartwheel, or jumping into the snow and making snow angels with just your t-shirt on and singing at the top of your lungs, or running around and giving everybody you see flowers.  Pranks are also popular to help other people get into the act in case they forget.  The point is to be good natured about them though.

Like all holidays, food and decorations are involved.  For food people try to eat the most wonderful food they can think of like a sweet ripe persimmon or a chocolate milkshake or the biggest fattest dagwood sandwich they can.  For decorations, it has become traditional to don the most outrageous hat you can think of, like court jester hats with bells, or giant hats with fruit all over them.  Some people dress up as T-rex.

On fridays, people read their favorite story about whole towns that have forgotten to enjoy life.  Examples are  Salman Rushdie’s “Haroun and the sea of stories” and  Thornton Wilder’s play, “our town”.

Now that we’ve been celebrating daily “Wow I’m Alive Minute” for many years, the world has been looking like a brighter place.  People seem to be thankful that it was invented.  Because it has changed peoples lives, some people feel it is a very religious holiday, but others feel free not to see it that way.  We are all grateful to Calvin and his tiger, Hobbes.

A Very Busy Outcrop Full Of Ocean Sediments Rt 43 and Geiser Rd Rensselaer Co. NY

Here we have alternating bands of shale and marble (or approximately marble).  These were laid down in deep ocean between what used to be the east margin of the North American Continent and a volcanic Island arc east of it.  Alternating climate conditions (say every 10s of thousands of years) made it possible for carbonates (coral reef? sea shells..) to form or simply muds.  The carbonates become limestone then marble, the mud becomes shale.

Other processes are storms, rivers, earthquakes that send sediments tumbling down to the sea.

Eventually, the Island arc smashed into us and broke these sediments into various blocks and piled them on top of each other and against North america.  Now they are part of NY state.  I think most of this is called the Taconic Allochthon, though I've seen it called many things.

There are many examples of this Taconic Allochthon around Troy, NY where I live.  There is LOTS of variation!  Most not exciting as this one.

Here are some tons of layers, some as thin as paper.  I'd love to learn to do some chemical analysis and figure out what each layer is made of.  The different colors no doubt relate to organic material or iron minerals in various states of oxidation (i.e. was it black anoxic smelly sulfurous mud deep under the water or something more oxidized at the surface?).

One day I'll consult with the geologists and find out exactly what peice this is.
